THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERSof the Fairfax Area
|
An informational report adapted from
various sources
By Sandy Blackwell, Program Director, 1992
With the presidential election concluded, we ponder again the process by
which the chief executive officer of our country is selected. Just how
extensive are our powers as the electorate? Does every vote carry the same
weight? Do the residents of some states have a more powerful vote than
those of another? If so, should this be charged? Can it be changed?
Thomas Jefferson wrote, "I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it away from them, but to inform their discretion."
