Celebrating Women's History
"The Equal Rights Amendment in Virginia"

The ERA Amendment, text written in 1923 by Alice Paul, was introduced into every session of Congress until it finally passed and was sent to the states for ratification in 1972. Thirty-eight states were needed for ratification; thirty-five did; three more are needed. Ratification bills have been introduced in every Virginia General Assembly session since, but rarely get out of committee. Celebrating Women's History Month, explore the how and why and the need for passage of the ERA.
