Why You Should Care About Education Funding

Did You Know that Virginia:

  • Is the 10th wealthiest state, yet in per-pupil funding by the state, Virginia ranks 41st?

  • Invested $4.3 billion less in education in 2021 than the average of other states with comparable household incomes?

  • Paid the average teacher 10 percent below the national average in 2020 and starting teacher salaries ranked 25th nationwide?

  • Earned a D in education funding from the Education Law Center?

LWVFA members will review and discuss the LWV-VA Education Study Report: How Virginia Funds Its Schools at their unit meetings in December to reach consensus on this important subject. Then the LWVFA board will use this information to make recommendations to the LWV-VA board to adopt or not adopt a position. The League can only advocate for issues on which we have a position. The matter will be voted on at the League state convention in June 2023.

If you are a member of the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area, who could not participate in a unit meeting or would like to provide additional information in the process of consensus, please review the study, complete the consensus question form, and send to judy.helein@lwv-fairfax.org by December 31, 2022.
