Why You Should Care About Money In Politics

Did you know?

  • Virginia is one of only five states that allows unlimited contributions from any type of donor.

  • There are no Virginia laws regarding how candidates or office holders who intend to run for re-election are permitted to spend their campaign funds.

  • Virginia’s oversight and enforcement of campaign finance activity does little to hold candidates accountable.

The analysis and proposed positions developed by this Campaign Finance Reform Study will cover the full scope of financing from a donation through its expenditure including:

  • Public disclosure of the donor.

  • Transparency in actual use of funds before and after the election.

  • Limits on personal use.

  • The Virginia executive branch structure to conduct effective oversight and enforcement.

LWVFA members will review and discuss the Environmental Justice Consensus Study at their unit meetings in February to reach consensus on this important subject so that the LWVFA board can make recommendations to the LWV-VA board to adopt or not adopt a position. The League can only advocate on issues for which we have a position. The matter will be voted on at the League state convention in June 2023.

If you are a member of the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area and would like to participate in the process of consensus, please review the study, complete the consensus question form, and send to judy.helein@lwv-fairfax.org by February 28, 2023.
